Are you considering buying a new carpet? The average life of a carpet is 5-10 years. Regular professional cleaning can extend this, but carpets need to be replaced eventually.  Here are some things to consider when buying carpets.

Cost– it is important to know all the costs of buying a new carpet. Some potential additional fees beyond the carpet and padding are:

    • Installation
    • Custom work
    • Door trimming
    • Floor repairs or preparation
    • Dump fees
    • Carpet and padding removal and disposal

Comparison Shopping– With any job for your home, getting at least 3 bids to compare is best.  Make sure to allow yourself time; choosing a carpet can be complicated due to all the options.  Take notes, comparison-shop, and bring samples home.

Think Function First– the right carpet depends on the room’s usage and traffic. Different types of carpets will perform better.  The type of fiber determines the performance and appearance of the carpet.  There are 5 categories of carpet fiber :

  • Wool
  • Nylon
  • Polypropylene (Olefin)
  • Polyester
  • Triexta (Smartstrand)

Styles of carpet –This determines the softness and durability.  The more textured the carpet, the more forgiving it will be.  Multi-colored carpet hides stains and dirt.

    • cut
    • looped
    • cut, and looped.

Installation – You want a high-quality installation.  Check with family and friends, online or neighborhood reviews.
