If you want to work on the stain yourself, the following are the most effective red wine stain removal remedies for wine stains in carpet. We recommend you test any stain removal method on a discreet spot of carpet before treating the stain to ensure color-fastness. For carpets with natural fibers or special dyes, check with manufacturer and/or cleaning professionals before attempting to treat the stain yourself.

Blot, blot, blot!
Step one to removing a red wine stain from carpet is blotting. No matter what method you choose, time is your enemy since you want to prevent the stain from soaking into the carpet. Grab a clean white cloth (towels and paper towels are fine) and press the cloth to the stain. Soak up as much of the red wine stain as you can (consider stepping on the towel). Do not rub, as rubbing can push the stain deeper into the carpet’s fibers.

Salt It
Don’t have time to treat the red wine stain in your carpet? After you’ve finished blotting the red wine stain, pour salt onto the affected area. The salt helps absorb the stain and can be quickly removed with a vacuum when you’re ready to treat the stain. Baking Soda can also be used to absorb the red wine stain.

Club Soda
Plain club soda is a great home remedy for removing red wine stains from carpet. The stain removal property is from the soda’s carbonation and sodium components. Apply club soda to the red wine stain and blot. After blotting the soda, apply a mixture of luke-warm water and dish soap (use a very small amount of soap) to any remaining stain. Use a clean cloth to blot until stain is removed.

White Wine
White wine helps neutralize red wine stains on carpeting. Simply pour white wine on top of the red wine stain and blot. This helps lift the red wine stain from the carpet and helps prevent it from spreading. If you are out of white wine, try plain vodka.

Carpet Shampoo & Peroxide
Mix a teaspoon of carpet shampoo with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide. Dip a clean sponge in the solution and blot the mixture onto the stain. Continue blotting until the red wine stain fades. Once the stain is removed, rinse the treatment from the carpet using warm water and a clean towel. Blot again.

White Vinegar & Detergent
Mix 1/3 of a cup white vinegar with 2/3 of a cup water. Saturate red wine stain with the vinegar solution and blot with a clean towel. Next, mix 1/4 teaspoon liquid dish detergent (make sure your dish soap is free from bleach and lanolin) with 4 cups of water. Spray or gently pour a small amount of the solution on the stain. Using a gentle blotting motion, work the detergent into the stain and continue as needed until stain is gone. To remove soap, spray treated area with water and blot.
